What was once an unused and overlooked room has been transformed into a richly layered, atmospheric library—a timeless retreat that evokes the quiet elegance of the Victorian era with a modern sensibility. Every detail has been carefully considered to create a space that invites reflection, reading, and repose. The client’s inherited pieces of artwork are featured throughout the room and allows her to enjoy bits of family history.

The walls are enveloped in Farrow & Ball’s Di Nîmes, a muted, chalky blue-grey that sets the tone for the room’s moody ambiance. This sophisticated hue, reminiscent of worn French workwear, is both grounding and evocative, acting as the perfect backdrop for the room’s many bespoke elements. The impactful wallpaper makes a statement and adds color and flair.

A custom chair rail, inspired by Victorian-era millwork, gracefully encircles the room. Its carved motifs and subtle profile add depth and historical texture, paying homage to traditional craftsmanship. Above and below this rail, custom built-in bookcases rise to meet the ceiling, These bookcases not only provide ample space for a growing literary collection but frame the room with a sense of permanence and purpose.

At the heart of the library is a custom fireplace surround, designed to anchor the space both visually and emotionally. Crafted with period-inspired details incorporating the chair rail design – it offers a cozy focal point, especially when lit during cooler months.

The lighting is a curated blend of elegance and function. A vintage-inspired chandelier adds glamour overhead, while strategically placed wall sconces and a pair of adjustable reading lamps provide ambient and task lighting with warmth and precision.

Framing the French Doors which open to the courtyard garden are custom drapes.
Tucked beneath the window is a charming reading nook, complete with the client’s family heirloom chair that we recovered in a flattering pattern. It’s the ideal perch for quiet moments with a book and a cup of tea.

Balancing the room are two key pieces of furniture: a handsome loveseat upholstered in a rich blue velvet, inviting the reader to curl up with a favorite novel. The oversized chair brings in the client’s favorite orange hues and invites company to join her in a fireside conversation. Both pieces were chosen not only for their comfort but for their timeless silhouettes and rich textures.

This moody Victorian library now stands as one of the most inviting and elegant spaces in the home—an ode to the past, tailored for today.
