Part Two:  Cabinets, Storage, Lighting, Mirrors, Hardware
Cabinets and Storage

Selection of cabinetry sets the tone for the bath.  Start with your needs, space availability, usage patterns and aesthetic by selecting this important piece of furniture first.  The cabinets and sinks are the best starting point in designing your space.  Is your look clean and modern? Traditional? Transitional? Do your research and figure out the configuration of the bathroom and then look for cabinetry that blends practicality and a wow-factor.  If you have room for a double sink – do it!  Even in a smaller primary bathroom, you can get a double sink by focusing on wall-hung options in a European style.  One of my favorite design inspirations come from visiting the Porcelanosa showrooms or online at Porcelanosa-USA.Com

Make sure the storage features of your selected pieces meet the needs of who is using the bathroom whether it’s a couple, kids or guests.  Make a list of the essential items your bathroom must house from hair and skincare products to hygiene supplies and medicines to hairdryers and curling irons to cleaning products and linens.

Lighting and Mirrors

Lighting and mirrors are both essential elements when it comes to remodeling your primary bath. Not only do they add a unique aesthetic to the room, but they also have practical applications. Good lighting is especially important in bathrooms because it can help you perform tasks such as grooming or styling hair with ease. Mirrors can reflect light, making the room appear larger and brighter.

When selecting lighting for your bathroom, consider the available space and what type of illumination you need. Ambient lighting is best for larger spaces, while task or accent lights may be more suitable for smaller areas. You should also think about the wattage of bulbs you’ll use—too much wattage can cause glare, while too little will create a dull atmosphere. Make sure to use dimmers as well so you can adjust light levels depending on the time of day or mood desired.

For mirrors, ensure that they are big enough to allow reflection from all angles of the room—this will make it appear larger and more inviting. Consider adding a frameless mirror for a contemporary look or an ornate frame for classic charm. Illuminated mirrors are also popular and provide additional lighting options in the bathroom; however, be aware that some may require extra wiring work which could inflate costs.  Recessed medicine cabinets that are mirrored is a great way to add storage combining two essentials in one product.

Hardware

Hardware includes everything from doorknobs and hinges to cabinet pulls, faucets, toilet paper holders, towel hooks, bars and rings.  Think of things as the perfect combination of function and beauty.  They serve the needs of room on a critically practical level.  And they can be thought of as the “jewelry” or adornment that makes the room sparkle. All of these elements are essential and play an important role in transforming any bathroom into a luxurious oasis; just make sure that you select pieces that suit your home’s style as well as your budget and needs!
